Educational Activities

Education is the corner stone of any successful nation. At the heart of most thriving global economies lies a dynamic educational system which prepares their youth to compete with the best in the world. There is no doubt that prosperity of nations now depends solely on the intellectual quality of its human resource and investing in high quality education is synonymous with investing in the future of a nation. The program is split into the following sub projects: non formal education, vocational training and school based training.

Non-Formal Education

The project goal is to transform of out of school children (street children) with an aim of getting them back into the mainstream education. The project is targeting children from the peri urban areas and are out of school, and children under temporary shelter(orphanage) etc.

Project description: This activity is aimed at maintaining the child’s standard of education which involves an orientation and thereafter to uplift and help the child to learn how to read and write, and strengthen and develop the child’s spirit towards learning, and recreation. Outreach is part of the project and provides the children with an opportunity to develop their respective talents within a youth development curriculum, as stipulated in the UN Convention on Rights of the Child.
It is a core area of positive child development as well as managing healthy physical development of the child through numerous activities. It involves eight curriculum areas of activities such as Educational, Health, Participation, Creative, and Social, Physical, and Spiritual experience. These are undertaken to build and improve youth talents, teamwork and teambuilding, leadership, socialization, physical fitness and also to enhance their skills in income generating activities.

  • Community children selected each year children under temporary shelter to join Non Formal Education (Selection done by community committee of 20) selected are children who are out of school, and in difficult circumstances.
  • Interview + home visit leading admission to N.F.E.
  • Prepare children for mainstreaming to formal education.
  • Teach literacy with an aim of lifting the child academic profile.
  • Care and case management plan developed for each learner.
  • Identify learning difficulties, nature children social activities and talents.
  • Linking with schools for mainstreaming to support children academically, socially and emotionally, N.F.E provides admission fee, school uniforms, school bag and school shoes,

Vocational Training

ACoHEducation Programme gives most vulnerable youngsters in Mumias area opportunity to train in job skills as well as prepare them for formal employment and self-employment. The training is carried out in collaboration with other institutions and youth and self-help groups  Many vulnerable girls that drop out of school continue to need training to enable them to become self-reliant by earning income and improve their living conditionsthis necessitates job skills training so as to improve living conditions of families.

Project strategy: This project intends to provide education, job skills, promote entrepreneurship, enhance quality of vocational training and create employment opportunities for young women and men of ages between 15 and 25 years of age in the Peri-urban areas of Mumias sub County.

This is aimed at contributing towards direct poverty reduction at household level. The project objective is to train youth who are heading households and lacks job skills.  These youths will be equipped with skills that would help them adapt to the rapidly changing market conditions to avoid future job loss. We have also developed proactive, innovative approaches to create jobs to the youths as well as rejuvenate self-help initiatives not just to create employment, but to create employment of sufficient quality to lift youths out of poverty in a sustainable way.

The project also undertakes capacity building for youths in addressing HIV and AIDS issues in the community. We work with relevant agencies in the community for sustainability and community ownership as well as establish linkages and networks to maximize the use of locally available resources.

 Trainings to be offered include garment making; tailoring and dressmaking, cookery, Carpentry and joinery, Building and construction, computer training, entrepreneurship, sewing and knitting machines repair.

The training Program: It is divided into three parts: self-development; mastering a trade, and entrepreneurship.
For the sake of the personal development of the students they are taught subjects like language, sexuality education, guidance and counseling, computer training as well as sports, theater, music and dance. All this raise the esteem and confidence levels of the youngsters during their training.

For mastering a trade we follow the respective government syllabus. We had the following occupations in view: tailors, dressmakers, designers, carpenters, maintenance persons, building and construction work, sign writers, artists, Most of the trainings take one year after which the youths sit for Government Trade Test and get government certificates. Entrepreneurship is an important element of our training.
